An ITV drama depicting the five-year manhunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe will delve into one officer’s dangerous undercover work.
The seven-part series, called The Long Shadow, tells the story of one of the country’s biggest murder investigations.
Sutcliffe murdered 13 women and attempted to kill seven others between 1975 and 1980.
Episode three of The Long Shadow will focus on the investigation spreading into Bradford after the murder of another woman.
A female police officer - WPC Jill Adams, played by Cara Theobold - takes on dangerous undercover work, while sex workers face danger each day.
The Radio Times’ reviewer, David Brown, said: “The powerlessness of women is explored in episode three, the starkest example being that of WPC Jill Adams, who’s set as bait for the killer. She stands on the street at night, eyes blinking nervously, while male colleagues sit in a warm car waiting for contact on a walkie-talkie that Jill hasn’t been told how to operate properly.
“It’s all horribly discomfiting, as are the scenes following the murder of 16-year-old Jayne MacDonald, whose death brings DCS George Oldfield (David Morrissey) into the case.
“Listen out for his vocabulary, which delineates between the victims who’ve somehow brought their fate upon themselves and Jayne, who’s perceived (in his words) as being innocent. It’s a mindset that’ll frame the investigation from here on in.”
