Over 150 volunteers from the Bradford community of Dawoodi Bohras walked over 1,000km as part of their Local Project Rise Initiative.
The walk was held to raise funds for Bradford's BIG Neonatal Appeal to expand family accommodation at Bradford Hospitals so that more parents can be near their babies while in the hospital. The Bradford Neonatal Unit cares for over 500 pre-term and poorly babies every year.
Dr. Hussain Raaj Cochin, a member of the Bradford Dawoodi Bohras, said, “The Dawoodi Bohras’ fundraising walk was held to commemorate the 80th birthday of the global leader of the faith, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, who regularly reminds his followers of the importance of contributing to society and helping those in need.”
Many local businesses supported the Dawoodi Bohras’ fundraising efforts, and their company logos were featured on banners positioned along the walking route and at the start/finish line.
The Lord Mayor Councillor Gerry Barker and Lady Mayoress Mrs Jean Barker attended the event to encourage those participating in the walk. The Lady Mayoress said, “The new neonatal department at Bradford Hospital was opened recently by HRH Princess Anne and the facilities are exceptional. The Dawoodi Bohras’ efforts will help Bradford's families requiring these exceptional services.”
The Dawoodi Bohras are grateful to Lisa Williams, Head of Fundraising at the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, for her support for the 150 walkers. Ms Williams was delighted with the amount of money raised by the charity walk.
