THE Shadow Home Secretary has urged the government to "crack down" on knife crime after the fatal stabbing in Halifax, yesterday.
West Yorkshire Police was called at 3.48am on Sunday to reports that three men had been assaulted in Commerical Street, Halifax.
All three were rushed to hospital with stab wounds - one of the men died from his injuries while another was fighting for his life, according to a spokesperson from the force.
The third man received treatment for a non-life-threatening injury.
The MP for Normanton, Pontefract, and Castleford Yvette Cooper described knife crime as "dangerous" and "devastating", claiming communities across the country shouldn’t be blighted with it.
The statement comes after two fatal stabbings in West Yorkshire last week and the killing of a schoolgirl in Croydon.
In a statement, Ms Cooper said: “The news of another fatal knife attack in Halifax is terrible - close on the heels of the attacks in Leeds, and the killing of a schoolgirl in Croydon.
"My thoughts are with all those affected.
“We cannot simply stand by as our communities continue to be blighted by rising knife crime.
"It is taking too many young lives.
"Urgent action is needed by Government to prevent and crack down on this dangerous and devastating crime before more lives are lost."
Meanwhile, the Labour MP for Halifax has asked witnesses to come forward and help police with their investigations.
MP Holly Lynch said: “Just awful news overnight.
"Thinking of those directly affected and the emergency services on the scene and providing care.
"If you have any information to share please do contact the Police.”
A huge cordon was in place on Commercial Street yesterday.
In a statement, West Yorkshire Police, said: “West Yorkshire Police were called at 3.48am to Commercial Street, Halifax, to reports that three men had been assaulted.
“All three men were taken to hospital with stab wounds.
"One of the men passed away at hospital, with another described as being in a critical condition.
"The third man has received treatment for a non-life-threatening injury.
“There is a significant police scene in place in the town centre while police conduct specialist searches and forensic enquiries.
"The public and local businesses are thanked for their patience at this time.
“The investigation is in its very early stages and further information will be released in due course.”
West Yokrshire Police has confirmed road closures are still in place this morning and have advised the public to leave extra time for travel.
On social media, West Yorkshire Police, Halifax, said: "Please avoid the New Road area of Halifax as there are still road closures in place. Please allow extra time for your journey if you are travelling to Halifax Town Centre."
According to First Bus, Market Street, Halifax, remains closed with buses being diverted.
The Bus company posted on X, fromerly known as Twitter "SERVICE UPDATE - 510/512/513/521/522/523 Market Street remains closed due to a police incident.
"Please use Horton Street and Winding Road to Dean Clough."
