FANS of Yorkshire Dales village music and dance are in for a treat as a new season of monthly events kicks off at The Buck Inn, Buckden, on Sunday, October 8.

Timed to link in with the Dalesbus 875 service, the afternoon, informal pub session will be for musicians, singers and poets, who will be able to use the bus to get to the Dales from Leeds and other towns along the route.

All are welcome to join in with an instrument or their voice or just go along an listen. Entry is free but the landlord appreciates the session even more if people 'sustain themselves with his food and drink', say organisers.

Monthly sessions at the Buck will take place on the second Sunday of every month to March; from 2pm to 5pm on October 8 and from then on from 1pm to 4pm to fit in with the Dalesbus winter timetable. Emphasis is mostly on Dales or Yorkshire dance tunes, songs and poems in local dialect, but the repertoire is as wide as performers’ offers, add organisers.

For dancing and music with ceilidh band, Buttered Peas, young and old are invited to go along to Amerdale Hall, Arncliffe on the afternoon of Sunday, October 22. There will be a licensed bar and tea and cake will be provided by the Amerdale Hall committee.   

A spokesperson for the Dales Traditional Music and Dance Collective said it promised to be a real community event with caller Terry Evans getting everyone up and dancing.

"The emphasis again is on traditional Dales tunes and dances but like with the Dales musicians of old the range of music and dance is wide and the caller chooses what to do to fit the energy and enthusiasm of the dancers."

The spokesperson added: "The new interest in traditional music and dance in the Dales arose from the publication in 2020 of the book There was None of this Lazy Dancing! Folk Tunes and Dances from the Yorkshire Dales by musician and historian Bob Ellis.A great source of musical and social history. To keep the revival flowing an informal group of musicians, singers and writers formed the Dales Traditional Music and Dance Collective."

For the Buttered Peas at Arncliffe on October 22, from 2pm to 5pm, entry is £10 cash on the door or £8.50 for tickets with cash or cheque in advance at Grassington Hub. Advance online payment is available via www.ticketsource.co.uk/grassingtonhub for £8.50 plus a booking fee.
