New 50mph speed limit signs and average speed cameras are being installed along the Stanningley Bypass. 

The new signs can be seen across the major route - including the slip road near Wickes and Swinnow Road.

Leeds City Council previously confirmed the new speed limits along the Stanningley bypass and Horsforth outer ring road are expected to come into force this Autumn.

As well as the reduced speed limit, the first permanent average-speed cameras in West Yorkshire will be installed along these stretches of road.

Councillor Simon Seary (Pudsey, Conservative) shared information from Leeds City Council, about the current status of the new scheme.

The speed camera system will not become live until the works and signage is complete on A647 Bradford Road, A6120 Ring Road Farsley and A6120 Broadway.

Lane closures on Stanningley Bypass

It said: "Work has commenced on the installation of the lower 50mph speed limit and average speed camera system on A647 Stanningley Bypass as of today, along with the ancillary works associated with this.

"We have a road space permit for this and next week to facilitate these works, which will be carried out under lane closures at varying points along the Bypass.

"The traffic management will be set out from 0930 each morning and taken down by 1530 to avoid the peak traffic hours.

"The works include the installation of the speed cameras themselves upon street lighting columns and the necessary electrical connections. Additionally, the road signage along the route is to be changed and we are taking the opportunity to upgrade and renew all road signage here.

"We also have Continental Landscapes in attendance on site carrying out pruning of foliage adjacent to the Bypass to ensure the visibility splay of the speed cameras is met.

"Our street lighting contractor, Enerveo, are also to be in attendance over the course of the fortnight to undertake works associated with the average speed cameras, as well as other outstanding works they have for the  Bypass and are utilising this traffic management to do so.

"Finally, colleagues in Highways Drainage have made arrangements for their contractors to attend site to undertake gully cleansing on the Bypass, on both Leeds and Bradford-bound carriageways and in both inside and outside lanes. This will include the clearing of non-running gullies, which will be timely in advance of the upcoming autumn and winter months.

"This work will support the implementation of the average speed camera scheme as part of the overarching Levelling Up Fund – Connecting West Leeds project. Following the signage installation on Stanningley Bypass, the signage team will move to complete the signage on A647 Bradford Road before moving onto A6120 Ring Road Farsley and A6120 Broadway to complete the works and allow for the speed camera system to become live and I or other colleagues will keep you up to date on progress as we move towards completion."
