Conference room would "look like giant cabin"

This Summer, a planning application for a large expansion of the Little Horton Unity Club was submitted to Bradford Council.

The work would see an extension built on the side of the long standing club that would be used for conference space.

Four one bed studio flats would be built above the club.

But the application, by A Gilmour, has now been refused by planners, who raised issues with the planned extension and flats.

Referring to the conference room extension, officers said: “The proposed extension results in a large box like appearance akin to a giant ...cabin that has been stuck on the end of the existing club.

“There is no architectural continuity and the proposed extension has no relationship with the existing building in terms of design or scale.”

The plan for the flats also attracted criticism, with officers pointing out two flats would have only roof lights – meaning future residents would not have windows to look out of.

Officers said: “The proposed central dwellings would lack adequate outlook. Standards of amenity offered will be poor.”

They described the planned entrance to the apartments, to the rear of the club, as “unwelcoming.”
