Proposals to install the only Commonwealth War Memorial outside of London in Bradford city centre have been approved.
An application for a new memorial stone in Bradford’s Memorial Gardens was approved by Bradford Council this week.
Plans for the memorial - to honour Commonwealth soldiers who died in the two World Wars – date back to 2021 following a review by Bradford Council of the District’s statues and memorials.
Bradford-based charity SHAPE-UK developed the plans, which will see a Yorkshire stone memorial placed in the memorial gardens between the Alhambra Theatre and Little Horton Lane.
The planning application for the work said: “Bradford currently does not have any form of recognition attributed to the Commonwealth effort.
“Around 29 per cent of the Bradford community is of Commonwealth heritage with different religions and from different cultural backgrounds.
“Currently the only other memorial to Commonwealth countries is situated in London “The Bradford Commonwealth Memorial will therefore be quite significant as it will be the only other Commonwealth memorial to reside outside London in the UK.”
Approving the scheme, planning officers said: “The design is well thought out and in keeping with the existing memorials.
“The use of local Yorkshire stone will sit well against the surrounding stone walls and features and in the setting of other nearby traditional buildings.”
