IN ITS canalside setting The Fisherman’s is a magnet for people having a day out.
“Our back door leads to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath so we get a lot of walkers, people with dogs, narrowboaters and others on boating trips,” says manager Chris Calvert. “There is quite a lot of mooring space nearby so people stop and come along for drinks and something to eat. We’ve got great views at the back in the beer garden, which is a lovely place to sit when the sun is shining.”
The stone-built pub, in Wagon Lane, Bingley - our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week - is also popular with locals. “There is a real community feel here. We have many regulars from Bingley, Cottingley, Eldwick and Gilstead, and teachers come from nearby Beckfoot School.”
The oldest record of a pub on the site is from the 1890s, but the building thought to have been there longer. “It has always been called The Fisherman’s,” says Chris.
The inn was taken over by Keighley-based Bridgehouse Brewery in April 2022, who revamped the interior to give a fresh new look.
“It’s quite traditional, with exposed brick walls and chimney breast, beams and hardwood floors,” says Chris.
Ales include Bridgehouse’s Blonde, Air Dale and Holy Cow, as well as guest beers. “Holy Cow is one of the three start-up beers that Bridgehouse first produced,” says Chris. “And we’ve got a good selection of wines and spirits.”
Food is mainly modern English, with classics such as fish and chips, sausage and mash and the Fisherman’s burger which has vegan and vegetarian alternatives.
The popular veggie platter includes cauliflower wings, breaded goats’ cheese, garlic mushrooms and three-bean chilli.
For groups of friends or families there’s the ultimate platter, which includes southern fried chicken, halloumi fries, garlic mushrooms and breaded king prawns.
A range of pizzas go down well with guests, as do light bites such as onion rings and sourdough slices with hummus and balsamic oil.
Sunday lunch is a big draw. “We have a traditional pub Sunday roast, with all the trimmings and have a veggie option,” says Chris, himself a vegetarian.
“We also do sandwiches and soup, which are perfect for people passing by,” says Chris.
On weekends live music takes place, with local artists performing. “We are hoping to offer barbecue days too, weather permitting,” says Chris, “And themed food evenings - such as Spanish - to showcase what our chefs can do.”
He adds: “There’s always a great atmosphere at the pub. It has been good to see new life injected into it since Bridgehouse took over.”
The Fisherman’s is one of ten pubs owned by the brewery, including The Airedale Heifer in Riddlesden, The Black Bull and The Kings Arms in Haworth.
Further work on the pub is to take place later this year, in particular to offer more outside space.
