A 30m high mobile phone mast could be installed at the Spen Valley Leisure Centre.
An application has been lodged with Kirklees Council for the equipment on the grounds of the sports centre to provide better EE coverage in the area.
Documents show that an existing mast at nearby Victoria Mills is expected to be removed after concerns about the structural integrity of the building – in particular the tower where the antennas are positioned.
As a result, the mast needs to be “urgently replaced”.
The bid details how the site has been “carefully selected in a position that benefits from some screening effects to provide the required new coverage to the area whilst minimising visual intrusion for residential properties”.
The applicant is EE and Hutchison, which is more commonly known as Three, which is seeking prior approval for the mast.
Cabinets will need to be installed at the base of the mast to house equipment, but this would be possible under permitted development.
The mast would be located to the south side of the building near trees and past the far end of the car park.
Plans show the roof level of the sports centre is 13.2m at this point.
