A WEST Yorkshire Police Superintendent has sprung to the defence of two officers who were targetted on the internet over their youthful appearance.

Supt Helen Brear shared an image on social media welcoming the new student officers to Kirklees District.

She said: “Welcome Alfie and Noah to Kirklees District.

"New student officers as part of our Police Uplift programme."

The post attracted over 250 comments, many attempting to make fun of the men.

Although all student officers must be aged 18 or over to apply for the role, it did not stop internet critics making pointed comments.

One said: "They look about 12 years old!"

Another added: "Does his Mum know he is out?"

Someone else said: "What happens when the 6 week school holidays are over?"

Supt Brear, who is stood next to Alfie and Noah in the photo, hit back days later.

She tweeted: "I have been incredibly disappointed by some of the responses.

"Both of my colleagues passed the recruitment process and displayed they had the skills and abilities.

"Both will make great cops and I as their leader will ensure they reach their potential."

British Transport Police Chief Superintendent Chris Casey also tweeted: "A steep learning curve, but looking young didn’t hold me back."
