PLANS to turn an “attractive” empty pub into a family home have been approved by Bradford Council.

An application to convert the British Queen on Huddersfield Road into a single dwelling went before the Bradford Area Planning Panel on Wednesday morning.

Two people had objected to the application, by Jabran Hussain, raising concerns that the conversion would lead to the loss of one of Bradford’s heritage pubs.

Planners had recommended the plans for approval, pointing out there was another pub directly opposite the British Queen, and informing members that the building was not listed and had no heritage protection.

Neither objector attended Wednesday’s meeting.

Chair of the panel Arshad Hussain (Lab, Toller) referred to an objector’s fears that historic fabric of the building would be lost if the plan was approved.

Planning officer Andrew Moxon replied: “It is an attractive building. But it is not listed, or in a Conservation Area.

“I would assume the inside has historic pub elements such as a bar. But if the building isn’t protected we can’t do anything, other than apply for an emergency listing, which isn’t in the scope of the local authority.

“There is currently no historic importance identified with the building that means it has been listed.”

Members voted to approve the plans.
