What's the view across West Yorkshire?

Across West Yorkshire, the survey revealed 14.8 per cent of patients in the NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board said they had a very poor or fairly poor overall experience with their GP service – down slightly from 14.9 per cent in 2022.

However, it was an increase from pre-pandemic levels when the 2019 report found 5.9 per cent were unhappy with their GP practice.

In 2023, 37.3 per cent of patients said they had a good overall experience, while 14 per cent of patients said their experience was neither good nor bad.

Other findings in 2023 include:

  • 53 per cent said it was not easy to get through to someone at their GP practice on the phone.
  • 34.8 per cent said it was not easy to use their GP's website to look for information or access services.
  • 26.7 per cent were dissatisfied with appointment times.
  • 18.4 per cent said their practice's receptionists were not helpful.

Dr James Thomas, Medical Director for NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “General practices across West Yorkshire delivered 16,235,790 appointments in 2022/23. This is a 5.1 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

“Most people report a positive experience overall, with 71 per cent of people in the patient survey rating their experience as “Good”.

“We also know that 15 per cent rated their experience as “poor”, similar to the previous year and a step change deterioration from previous levels. This needs to improve, and we are committed to ensuring this is the case.

“Improving this position is a priority nationally, through the NHS England Primary Care Access Recovery Plan, and for us locally.

“We are actively working on a range of ways in which services will improve, for example, through continued investment in staff and technology, through empowering people to use the NHS App, implementing self-referral pathways, and expanding services offered by community pharmacies.

“We share good practice and run campaigns, such as ‘It’s a GP thing’ about the extensive offer of help available to people from their local practices.”

He added that the NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board’s Joint Forward Plan recognises “the need to recruit and retain more GPs and practice nurses to expand the workforce to meet the growing need of the country’s rising population”.
