A SPECIALIST care home once rated ‘inadequate’ has turned its fortunes around.
Wykewood, on Huddersfield Road in Wyke, was given the lowest rating following its first inspection in September 2022.
Serious concerns were raised about the home, which supports adults living with complex mental health needs and neuro-disabilities.
In a report from that visit, inspectors said there were “widespread and significant shortfalls in service leadership”.
They added: “Leaders and the culture they created did not assure the delivery of high-quality care.”
The home is now rated as ‘good’ overall and in all key inspection questions apart from ‘is the service safe?’. That question is rated as ‘requires improvement’ – up from ‘inadequate’.
The unannounced inspection was carried out on May 4.
In the latest report, inspectors said: “Many of the shortfalls identified on the last inspection had been improved or rectified by the registered manager.
“The provider had effective audit systems in place which were driving the quality in the service.
“The registered manager was completing daily audits, walkarounds, and oversight in the service had improved.
“The provider was engaging with people, relatives, and staff through a range of different methods to gain feedback on ways to improve the service.
“Staff told us the management team were supportive and visible on the units.”
The home is no longer in special measures and the latest inspection did not find any breach of regulations.
Selina Wall, managing director at Wykewood care home, said: “Our priority is to always provide exceptional care for adults living with complex needs, enabling them to be supported in their communities and be closer to their families.
“Having had a difficult end to last year, falling short of what we know we can achieve, we are pleased the Care Quality Commission has now recognised the very positive progress we have made over the past 10 months and has awarded the home a ‘good’ overall rating.
“This is down to the significant hard work from the whole team, which reflects their dedication to making sure the home provides the standards of care and support that residents and their loved ones deserve, and that our organisation is committed to and known for.
“We will continue working hard to maintain the positive standards we now have in place, and to go further still, as we strive to be the best we can be and deliver on our mission of making ‘every day better’ for the people we support.”
