A MAN brandished a hammer as a weapon on a residential street in Bradford, a court heard.

Kane Harrison appeared before Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday, July 11, having pleaded guilty to threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place.

The court heard that Harrison was caught on CCTV getting out of his car on Upper Rushton Road and getting into an altercation with another man on January 8 this year.

Prosecutor Camille Morland said Harrison brandished the hammer, then got into a physical altercation with the victim.

Subsequently, other people got involved and public disorder ensued, she added.

The fight itself did not actually involve the hammer, the court was told.

Harrison, 30, of Farleton Drive, Birkenshaw, was sentenced to four months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.

He must also carry out unpaid work in the community and complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

For Harrison, it was said that this was not a case of a car screeching to a halt and somebody jumping out with a weapon.

It was a small hammer that happened to be in the car – it was not brought to the scene in order to inflict violence, he said.

Judge Colin Burn said that while it was clear that the pair had “previous knowledge and dislike” of one another, he accepted that this was not a pre-planned targeted attack.

“It seems to me you have a problem with controlling yourself when you get angry and that is inevitably going to lead to serious trouble.”
