A NEW burger and pizza café providing a hangout spot for youngsters has opened today.

CCG’s Food Shack, in Carr Road, Calverley officially opened to the public for the first time at 2.30pm.

Couple Joanna Kitson, 31 and Richard Greaves, 38, who now live at the top of the village, are the brains behind the new business.

It is their first foray into the food industry, having set up a cleaning company in 2021, followed by a construction firm in July last year.

The shack will focus on gourmet burgers and pizzas, while offering the option to take the food away, or dine in and take advantage of the premise’s five tables and sofa, with room for 11 people.

Ms Kitson said: “I think we’re just excited.

“We take every day as it comes, life is too short.

“We always do what we want to do.”

That mantra comes from the challenges the couple have had to overcome to get where they are now.

But since starting their construction company, they haven't looked back.

Mr Greaves said: “We started with a hammer and saw to owning three companies in the space of two years.”

The couple took over the premises around a month ago, after it had been dormant for seven months.

Wan’s – a Chinese takeaway – closed in October last year, after serving the community for a number of decades.

It left Calverley without a dedicated takeaway and Ms Kitson hopes the shack will mean children will not have to trek to surrounding areas as much for a tasty treat.

She said: “It’s quite important, the guy who has a café over the road actually came over with his daughter and said it’s what Calverley needs.

“Calverley doesn’t have its own food place, people order from everywhere else.

“You can literally walk over, send your kids from the park.

“A lot of the community are backing us with having a food place.

“A lot of kids have to venture out.”

The shack will also provide a hangout spot for young people, with a TV in the back room offering Netflix, Amazon Prime and football matches when they are on.

In keeping with that theme, an event is running this evening for youngsters.

The aim is to develop a number of events in the coming months, including a bingo night for children, as well as a family pizza night on Sundays.

CCG’s Food Shack opens from 2pm until 8pm from Monday to Wednesday and 2pm until 11pm on Thursday to Sunday.
