STORIES of "bravery, selflessness and dedication" were heard as the heroes among Bradford police were honoured at an awards ceremony.

The event was held at Odsal Stadium last night (Wednesday, June 21) and led by Bradford District Commander Chief Superintendent Rob McCoubrey.

He thanked his officers for the 500 calls and 200 crimes they deal with on a daily basis.

Three special awards, one final gong, and several commendations were given out on the night.

One of the big winners on the night was PCSO Daniel Hall.

PCSO Hall helped a vulnerable man who was a victim of cuckooing, a practice where people take over a person's home and use the property to facilitate exploitation.

His exceptional support during a time of personal crisis ensured the man was able to remove himself from his past, and he has since started a new life.

PCSO Hall also picked up the final and biggest award - The Bradford Shield - which will be displayed at Trafalgar House Police Station.

He told the Telegraph & Argus: "I am really emotional. I have never got any awards before.

"The Bradford district is a hard place to work, all my colleagues will tell you that.

"From going to colleges and teaching staff, to being on the street and at a scene, I get sent across the district."

PC Nazrah Kauser and Sundas Rashid won the special award for The Protection of Vulnerable People.

Their investigation and victim focus led to a sexual assault suspect being identified charged and remanded into custody.

Meanwhile, PS Aaron Shah was given The Support of Diversity Equality and Inclusion special award.

PS Caroline Foster was part of a team who dealt with a child recruited by a lone violent drug dealer.

The team's understanding and proactive intervention were commended as the child was removed from danger.

PS Foster said: "Our main aim is to protect young people in the district and gain information if young people are being exploited by drug dealers."

In a 10-week period, PC Peter Hampshire submitted 223 intelligence reports and made 117 arrests - the highest number ever achieved by a student working in the Be on the Lookout department.

After being commended, he told the T&A: "I just have a natural habit of being able to understand offenders.

"Getting them onside by speaking to them in the right way and encouraging them to get things sorted rather than running away."

The Bradford District Team 3 Patrol was commended with an award for making more than 2,400 arrests in a financial year.

Team inspector Alex Artis said: "I was set a challenge by my CI to try and achieve 2,000 arrests which had never been done by any Bradford patrol team in its history.

"We managed it in nine months."

PC Jack Senior and PC Kieran Johnson were commended for attending a report in relation to a vulnerable man in April 2021.

The man was found in poor living conditions, eating mouldy food, and struggling to cope.

The officers using their own money purchased a hot meal for the man and essential food items.

PCSO Aiden Playfoot was commended for an incident in April this year, where he had cause to stop an offroad bike. The rider soon tried to make off, but PCSO Playfoot was commended for managing to remove the male's balaclava to identify him.

The male managed to break free leaving a bag that was found to have a quantity of drugs and money.

Also commended was PC Rory Romani who led action on violence towards women and girls by pushing the team to arrest 29 suspects in one week.

DC Adam Flaxington, DC Kate Davis, PC Gemma Walton, PC Scott Tyson and PC Donna Ramsden, of the Bradford Police Online Investigation Team, were commended for dealing with 250 prisoners, executing 120 warrants, and securing more than 100 years in prison sentences in 2022.

Gill Arnold DL presented PC Toni Hinells with the Colleague of the Year award.

DC C/Supt McCoubrey said: “I want to pay tribute to the exceptional work and commitment of police officers, staff, PCSOs, volunteers, partners and members of the public who have gone over and above what is expected to keep people in Bradford safe."

Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe OBE, added: “I was honoured to attend and hear some truly special stories of bravery, selflessness and dedication."

Other winners on the night included PC Hayley Oldfield, Inspector Claire Stothers, DS Melissa King, and Professor Jeff Gold.
