AN application to install a large advert over part of a city centre mural has been submitted to Bradford Council.

The colourful mural on James Gate, John Street, which was painted in 2020 by London-based street artist Mr Cenz, is already partly covered by an advert for Bismillah Accessories – the business based in the building.

Now an application for advertising consent to replace this advert with a much bigger advertisement for the same business has been submitted to the Council.

The application, by Shakeel Faquir of Wilson Building Projects, says the PVC banner advert will be 6 metres tall and three metres wide. It would likely cover the woman’s face.

If consent is approved, the advert could remain in place until May 2026.

A decision on the application is expected in August.

The mural was painted to highlight the issue of domestic violence.

Numerous Bradford residents expressed their outrage at the exiting advert when it was first installed two years ago, with some even claiming it would torpedo Bradford’s chances of winning City of Culture.
