The legacy of a long-standing Bradford bakery is set to continue under 20-year-old Holly Marshall’s new business venture.
Holly has grown up surrounded by Marshall Bakers’ famous vanilla slices and sandwiches.
Now she will step into the kitchen herself and transform the former Marshalls shop in Queensbury into Marshalls Bakehouse.
Holly will be serving up her own creations, barista style coffee, and hot and cold sandwiches, as well as recipes crafted by her grandparents years before.
Marshall Bakers, which had stores in Wyke, Wibsey, Queensbury, and Great Horton, was forced to close after 43 years in business this April.
The popular bakery had struggled to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic amid rising inflation, energy bills, and food costs.
Holly hopes she will be able to give back to her parents when Marshalls Bakehouse opens its doors this summer.
The businesswoman, who grew up in Queensbury and now lives in Brighouse, said: “I’m hoping to bring a new vibe to everything.
“When the business first shut we were completely devastated. It was very stressful, emotionally, financially, and I’m hoping to give something back to them. I want them to enjoy the rest of their life and hopefully be able to retire.
"I want to build something for me but them two have worked so hard and unfortunately lost everything. It was just so gutting for everyone. I want them to have something back.
“I’m nervous but I’m excited. I’ve got a lot of support from family and life long friends helping us open the shop, joiners my dad’s known his whole life. I’ve grown up around my family’s business, I didn’t want to let it go. It was so much hard work and I couldn’t let it disappear because of something out of our control.
“The whole situation with inflation and cost of living, that’s what killed it off. If I can make something for myself that’s quite an achievement.
“I wouldn’t be in this position where I feel confident without them. They’re very hard working, genuine, down to earth people. It’s bittersweet.”
The menu at Marshalls Bakehouse will include the original vanilla slices.
The new sandwich shop will also offer a delivery service and buffets.
“We couldn’t bring it back without bringing the vanilla slices,” she said.
“That recipe was done in the 80s when the shop first opened and it’s been the same since.”
