WILLIAM Haigh, better known as Billy, was a milkman who lived in Carlby Grove, Keighley.

He was reputedly the last milkman to do his rounds with a horse and cart. He could be seen in Keighley throughout the 1950s and possibly the early 1960s. Maybe you remember him? Did he deliver to you?

Up until the 1980s almost everyone got their milk from a milkman, although it was uncommon to have it delivered by horse and cart. Usually it was a milk van - you would hear the glass bottles clinking against each other as the vehicle made its way down the street.

Glass milk bottles were used up until the early 1980s, when paper cartons began to replace them (although the first ever paper milk carton was used in 1933). These then turned into the plastic containers we know today.
