A hit restaurant famous for its smash style burgers has earnt the seal of approval from Rate My Takeaway’s Danny Malin. 

The iconic food reviewer was left with tingling taste buds after visiting Phatboyz, a burger restaurant and takeaway on Thornton Road. 

The family-run business rose to success during the lockdowns as orders for their popular smash patties rolled in from across West Yorkshire. 

After receiving recommendations from other food lovers, Danny decided it was time to put Phatboyz to the test.

Danny tried the classic smash box, featuring Phatboyz’ classic Smash beef burger, two wings, house doner kebab, chips with cheese sauce, lettuce, and coleslaw.

He also supped up the Crazy Krays Shake, made with caramel, chocolate sauce, and crushed kinder bueno, and tried macaroni cheese on-the-house.

“It’s a nice thick chocolate shake,” he said. 

“You can taste the Kinder Bueno coming through, you can taste the white chocolate coming through.”

As he headed out on his food mission, Danny told viewers: “It’s a takeaway called Phatboyz that do these absolutely brilliant burgers, boxes full of delicious chicken, all sorts of stuff.

He later added: “I can’t wait to try it.”

“It looks good when you go inside, it's glitzy.”

Once the YouTuber whipped out his camping table and chair, it was time to tuck in. 

Starting with the cheesy sauce-covered fries, Danny said: “They’re naughty. That’s a nice little bit of sauce on there, they are gorgeous wow.”

Phat Boyz brought the heat with a spicy slaw covered salad as Danny said: “That has got a right kick to it, it’s nearly took back of my throat out.”

The doner meat won Danny over as he told the camera man: “It’s covered in sauce, it’s garnished, oh wow, now that has blown me away. That kebab meat is absolutely delicious, it has got a right nice kick of spice and chilli to it and this is some kind of spicy mint sauce - the flavour coming out of this. That is some of the nicest doner meat i’ve had in a long time, that is tasty.”

The burger was described as “an absolute dream”. 

Danny said: “This is what it’s all been about, this is what made Phatboyz - we’ve got a nice toasted brioche bun, some kind of relish, fried onions, gherkin, cheese, patties, bit of lettuce, bit more sauce, more onion. It smells amazing.

“That is just how a smash burger should be cooked - you’ve got a nice caramelisation of the meat but in the centre it’s soft, succulent, full of flavour. 

“That is an absolute dream.”

The final verdict 

Reflecting on his smashbox style lunch, the YouTuber said: “This to me is the future because you’re getting a few different bits here. 

“We started off with the skin on fries in a beautiful cheese sauce, they are absolutely gorgeous, they taste dreamy, they right tickled my taste buds and got me ready for the meal. I then moved onto this bit of salad - this slaw has got a right kick to it. That set my mouth on fire, it set me alight. I went onto this doner meat - it’s absolutely gorgeous. That sauce with that bit of mint just kicks it off. That’s one of the nicest donner meats I’ve had in a long time. Little firecracker wings, full of seasoning, full of flavour. They’re crispy sloppiness. It just started to set my mouth on fire. For me the showstopper, the burger, that is absolutely amazing. It tastes so fresh. When I’m biting into it it’s just oozing full of flavour. That is one of the best smash patties I’ve had in a while. Sauces, they’re nice.
