A BRADFORD foodbank is once again hosting an Eid party to give struggling families the opportunity to celebrate.
JKN Foodbank, based in Manningham, is offering Muslim families across the district a chance to enjoy Eid with hot meals, goodie bags, and the chance to win an extra special hamper.
The charity works with an Islamic ethos and as the sacred month of Ramadhan comes to a close, is hoping to help those impacted by the cost of living crisis closer to home.
On Eid, Muslims must offer a small amount of charity to help others who may be struggling, and this ties in with the foodbank's approach.
A spokesperson said: “We want to bring joy to families and help them celebrate.
“We’ve been doing it twice a year and we’re seeing an increase in numbers of people who are attending.
“Everyone who attends is given a goodie bag and this year we’ll be handing out activity packs for children.
“There’s even some special hampers that will be given to people who find a winning ticket in their goodie bag.”
The charity has been providing ‘iftar’ meals to families across the district over the month of Ramadhan, to ensure they have enough food to break their fast.
This year's Eid party will take place on Sunday, April 30, between from 3pm to 4.30pm and it is a free drop-in service open to anyone in need.
“The event has always been really well received in the past," said the spokesperson.
“Our guests are moved by the amount of effort that we have made for them and are highly appreciative that we are always there for them every Sunday despite the bank holidays, Ramadhan, or whatever the weather is like, Alhamdulillāh.”
In previous years, the Eid party has been attended by more than 200 people.
The foodbank provides warm meals each week but at the Eid party there will be more celebratory food, with starters of chicken pasties, samosas, kebabs and pakoras, followed by a main course of pilau rice or meat curry with chapati and sweet rice or rice pudding for dessert.
“We put a lot of emphasis on the dessert table at the party, we have cakes as well as other things," said the spokesperson.
“We want people to enjoy themselves.”
Fresh fruit and vegetables will also be available on the day as well as the usual foodbank provisions.
