BACKING on to a cricket ground, The White Swan is the perfect setting for a leisurely drink.
The characterful stone building that dates back to at least 1862, sits beside Yeadon Cricket Club, having an attractive beer garden with open views of the ground.
“It’s lovely - in spring and summer people like to come along and sit with a drink to watch the game,” says a spokesperson for the inn, our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week.
It’s not only on warm, sunny days that customers can sit outside - the High Street pub has a large, decked undercover area with patio heaters, should the weather be wet or chilly, and as darkness falls, the area is swathed in fairy lights.
The smart, comfortable interior of the pub is a mix of traditional and contemporary design and has the added benefit of a sizeable function room.
“We host functions including weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, christenings and wakes. The function room is private with its own entrance and bar, so it is very popular,” say the spokesperson.
Live music on a weekend is a big hit at The White Swan, with other events including bingo nights. Charity events to raise money for good causes are also held at the pub.
The varied menu features pub classics including scampi, fish and chips and sausage and mash their trademark Swan Burger, a 6oz beef burger served with streaky bacon, cheddar cheese, gem lettuce, beef tomato and burger sauce.
Creamy mushroom, garlic and thyme penne pasta is a popular vegetarian option, with sweet potato and red pepper burger among the vegan choices.
The White Swan is in Timothy Taylor's Champion Club - awarded to pubs who go the extra mile to serve the brewery’s beer - for consistently selling well-kept ale.
The mainstays at the bar are ever-popular Landlord and Boltmaker.
“We also sell Three Swords and Dissolution from Kirkstall Brewery, as well as two guest beers. Madri is our best-selling lager, with Staropramen and Guinness lager a close second and Aspall’s being our best-selling premium cider."
The pub has seven stylishly furnished letting bedrooms, which are well-used, in particular by people flying in and out of Leeds-Bradford Airport.
It’s also easily accessible from Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate.
As well as visitors from around the UK and often across the globe, the friendly inn attracts many people who live locally.
“We have load of regulars who visit us every day,” adds the spokesperson. “We are popular with families coming to eat out and we often run a kids eat free day.”
With Yeadon Tarn on its doorstep, many people stop off for a drink at the dog-friendly pub while out walking.
The White Swan is currently undergoing a partial refurbishment, with work including a kitchen extension and internal redecoration, with new carpets and seating.
