THE Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Martin Love, was the guest of honour at the city’s Dawoodi Bohra congregation’s multi-faith Iftar event to mark the breaking of the daily fast during Ramadan.

The Dawoodi Bohras of Bradford, like millions of Muslims around the world, have been observing the holy month of Ramadan since the last week of March 2023. In the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the ninth and most sacred month of the year.

Members of the Dawoodi Bohra faith fast from dawn to dusk, recite and memorise the Quran, share and invite people for meals, and engage in charity, empathy and selfless services such as organising local food drives.

Other guests at the event included the leader of the Bradford Council, Councillor Susan Hinchliffe, Cllr Angela Tait, Deputy Lieutenant Dr Manoj Joshi, faith leaders, Mahesh Mistry, Dr Javed Bashir, Mohinder Singh Mann, and PC James Elliot.

The Lord Mayor said: “The Dawoodi Bohras of Bradford regularly contribute towards environmental initiatives and make a positive impact with their river clean up, tree planting and litter picking projects.”

Raaj Cochin, of the Bradford Dawoodi Bohras, said: “Ramadan is an occasion of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and strengthening of bonds with family and friends.

“It is a time when our community comes together to support one another and share in the blessings of this month. “We were honoured to be joined by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Martin Love, and all of our guests on this important occasion.”
