What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic year. On the sighting of the new moon, Muslims began their fasts on the evening of March 22,2023.

Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world observe a month of fasting, refraining from food and drink from dawn until sunset. It is a time for self reflection and the strengthening of one's faith. Muslims also increase their acts of worship during this month such as praying extra prayers and reading the Quran to maximise their rewards. Ramadan is also a month of giving and charity. Charity is an important aspect of Islam as it is one the 5 pillars and Ramadan is an opportunity to do good and gain lots of reward. In 2014, nearly £6 million was raised in Yorkshire along  during Ramadan. The money was spent in areas such as food banks and homeless shelters. They also used the proceeds to fund global projects supporting orphans and families in need. Wells and fresh water supplies are installed and food parcels are sent to the poorer countries of Palestine, Syria, Yemen and Somalia. For years, Islamic Relief has been on the frontlines of some of the most devastating humanitarian crises around the world. From natural disasters to conflicts and wars, they provide aid and support to those who need it most. They work tirelessly to provide food, shelter, healthcare, and education to those who have lost everything.

Ramadan ends in a huge celebration knows as Eid-ul-Fitr. The name of which stems from the aspect of charity. Before Muslims can celebrate Eid, every household has to donate money towards Eid gifts for people less fortunate than themselves ensuring that Eid is a festival not only  for the rich but also for the poor.
