Bradford Council has urged drivers to respect mourners in a Bradford cemetery after concerns were raised about speeding drivers and safety.

Scholemoor Cemetery, which has several roads for drivers to use, has a speed restriction of five miles per hour.

The cemetery is often used as a shortcut to avoid traffic queues.

But the Council said it was aware that many motorists do not abide by the speed limit.

It isn't the first time the issues have come to light - Lidget Green Primary School moved to encourage parents to show consideration when using the route back in 2019.

Now, one resident is making another call for action on risky and careless driving standards in the cemetery.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “I don’t think everyone means to speed. There are some that do move a bit fast. There are people walking through it. I’ve seen parents almost mowed down by people overtaking each other. The funeral cortege, I’ve seen a couple of times cars have overtaken them.

“It just happens all the time. The school run, they drive through really fast. It seems to be just normal.

“I don’t know if the council could do anything about it. You couldn’t put speed bumps there because of the funeral cars.

“There’s a couple of burials I’ve seen roads blocked by the funeral cars, probably to give them respect. As far as I can tell every road leads to the main road, they only tend to want to use that one. They come out of their cars.

He added: “Bradford as a whole, driving standards are a bit low. There’s so many people here, everyone seems angry, in a rush.

“We just all need to be kinder to each other. What I’ve seen on the road, there’s a lot of young new drivers who are driving their cars aggressively.

“When it comes into the cemetery it’s not right. I’ve heard it from other friends in other cemeteries but this seems to be the main concern.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

“Something needs raising.

“I’m surprised there aren’t any road maps. Say if you’ve got five roads leading to the main two, everyone seems to only use one and if that’s blocked off there’s anger and panic, but they all connect."

“When I see a funeral or burial I’ll try go round or come back later.”

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said:  “There are signs in Scholemoor Cemetery that alert people using the road that the speed limit is 5mph.  Sadly not everyone abides by this and we would like to remind drivers of the 5mph limit and to be respectful when driving through the cemetery.”
