IT has been over two years in the making but a Bradford school will shortly be opening its doors to a new edible garden space.

In May 2021, Christ Church Academy, on Wrose Brow Road, Shipley, contacted the charity Cities for Trees, who proposed to install an edible garden.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The charity offered to cover 80 per cent of the build with the school contributing 20 per cent.

Funding this cost was still out of reach of the school, so the Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust (BDAT) stepped in and provided the additional funds to allow the project to commence. Overall the project is valued at £30,000.

Now that the garden is almost complete, the school will receive support from the Grow for Schools charity, who will educate the children to plant, grow and harvest everything from beans to potatoes and flowers to wall climbers.

Planters will be named after the school’s Christian values and the space will double up as a calm, reflective area for pupils and staff.

The initial seeding phase will start in May and with almost 20 planters to look after, all year groups will take on the responsibility to care for their own ‘patch’ until harvest.

Philippa Foster, headteacher at Christ Church Academy, said: “The garden will have such a positive impact on our pupils.”
