PLANS to turn part of a commercial building on the edge of Bradford city centre into flats have been approved.
Winwin Estates applied to turn the upper floors of 32 Hammerton Street, off Leeds Road, into seven flats late last year.
The building has most recently been used as a bedding store, and is in an area of Bradford dominated by industrial businesses.
Plans to develop a small industrial park on a long vacant site opposite this building were approved in 2021, but work is yet to start.
The plans for 32 Hammerton Street will see the ground floor retained for business use and the seven, one-bed flats spread out over the upper two floors.
Planning officers said: “Although the site is allocated as part of an employment zone, there is a significant need for housing in Bradford and a significant underdelivery of new homes.
“There are residential units to the upper floors of neighbouring buildings, and the current use as storage is unlikely to generate any significant levels of employment.
“Although no parking is provided with this property, this is the same as the current situation. The Highways Officer suggests that the parking demand for the proposed use is likely to be the same as it is for the current use.”
