A POPULAR local businesswoman has been selected by the Green Party as its candidate for the Tong Ward.
Green Party members voted to select Ursula Sutcliffe, who owned and ran the plant shop and cafe ‘Plant One On Me' in Bradford city centre until it closed last year.
Ursula has lived in Holme Wood for nearly thirty years and has raised her family here.
She has been a vocal campaigner for small business owners.
Ursula said: “It’s been great seeing the impact that Green Party councillors have had in the community I live in over the last few years.
"It feels like this part of Bradford had been forgotten about - but that is changing.
“Now I have more time, I want to spend more time making things better for the people in the area I live in.
“With ‘City of Culture’ coming to Bradford in a few years I want to make sure communities in the south of the city really get to see the benefits of that.
"But my top priority will be making sure there is more opportunity for young people growing up in this part of Bradford.”
The Green Party first won Tong Ward in 2021 and increased its vote share in 2022 when Celia Hickson was elected.
Prior to then, the ward had elected Labour councillors for decades.
Councillor Matt Edwards, the first Green Party councillor for Tong Ward said, “I am absolutely delighted that Ursula has been selected by Green Party members to represent us in the upcoming election.
“I’m proud that, at the local level, Greens have started to change things for the residents of Bierley, Holme Wood, Tong Village and all the other communities that make up the ward.
“It’s been great to see all the positive messages she has received since we made the announcement.
"Ursula has the passion and the determination to get things done for the area and I know she would make an excellent councillor.”
Plant One On Me was on John Street and was forced to close due to ever-rising costs last April.
The business opened in the city in May 2019, initially in Upper Millergate.
At the time, Ursula said: "To all my dear and trusted customers, it is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that we have to close our doors."
Local elections take place on May 4.
