THE director of Bradford Live says the damage sustained at Bradford’s iconic former Odeon theatre is thought to be "limited" following a fire.

Firefighters were scrambled to the historic city centre building at 10.40am on Friday before cordoning off nearby roads.

Black wisps of smoke could be seen rising from the dome as crews from Bradford, Odsal, Cleckheaton and Shipley gathered on the roof.

At the time, watch commander Simon Moore told the Telegraph & Argus the fire was believed to have been caused by workmen doing hot work.

He described the fire as a “challenging incident”.

Lee Craven, Director of Bradford Live, said: “The fire that occurred last Friday in the roof space of the south turret of the former Odeon has caused obvious concern.

"Bradford Live’s structural engineer is on-site today to access the damage and implications for future work in this area.

"Initial inspection suggests the damage is limited.

"We will update that assessment once the design team has finished its investigation and provide more details at that time.”

The former cinema and theatre is being transformed into a 3,800-capacity live music venue, Bradford Live, after lying empty for over two decades.
