A MAN living above a Bradford shop where a police car crashed into it has described being woken by a "loud bang, like a bomb".

Mohammed Naveed, his wife and three children were all asleep when two police cars were involved in a crash at a row of shops on Keighley Road, Frizinghall, at around 3am this morning.

The road was cordoned off and West Yorkshire Police confirmed two of its vehicles were involved in the crash which caused major structural damage to the shops - Ideal Bathrooms and Tiles and a building being renovated by Jamil Mini-Market.

Mr Naveed's family was one of two families living in the flats above the building owned by Jamil Mini-Market.

"Mr Naveed said: "I was sleeping when I heard a loud bang, like a bomb.

"We all got up and I could see the smoke from the crash rising up outside the window.

"We were all really scared and wondered what was happening.

"Then I heard a loud knock on the door. It was the police and they asked us to come outside.

"We weren't injured but my child was very scared."

Mr Naveed, who is the nephew to the owners of the property, Cllr Rizwana Jamil and her husband Jamil Akhtar, said they then found a place for him, his wife and three children to stay.

And just three doors down the same row of shops where the crash took place, the Green Party ward candidate Khalid Mahmood will soon be moving his office

Mr Mahmood said: "It's devastating to see this very serious incident that took place.

"I'm thankful that nobody has died. If it would have happened in the daytime, it could have taken lives."

He also spoke about how the incident will impact the community.

He said: "The local community won't be able to use these stores.

"One local woman was telling me this (the mini-market) was her local shop.

"She'll now have to go by car to get her groceries."
