More details have been revealed about a fire at a derelict building in part of Bradford.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) was called at 7.30am to reports of a fire at the former Canterbury Youth Centre, Arum Street.

Crews from Odsal, Bradford, Fairweather Green, Shipley, and Stanningley fire stations attended.

Residents and businesses were urged to avoid the area and keep their windows shut.

Big plumes of smoke could be seen rising into the sky.

Fire service update

The fire service has now shed light on the scale of the fire in an updated incident log.

A spokesperson for WYFRS said the fire was "located in the roof" of the single storey building.

At the height of the fire, flames covered 25 per cent of the former Canterbury Youth Centre.

No casualties were reported, a spokesperson confirmed.

Firefighters used one breathing apparatus and one aerial hose to tackle the fire throughout the morning.

The log also listed the use of five breathing apparatus, three large jets, and two hose reel jets.

Specialist teams included the hose layer unit, welfare unit, aerial appliance, aerial support, and the command unit light.

One local resident said: "I live on street below and the smell of smoke filled my whole house."

The Canterbury Youth Centre closed at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. During lockdowns, the building suffered significant damage from vandalism and became a magnet for anti-social behaviour.
