A YOUNG man is fighting for his life after a crash at a zebra crossing near a cricket ground.

The collision happened on Kirkstall Lane (B6157), close to Headingley Cricket Ground where Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) play, at 10.55pm last night.

It involved a male pedestrian, aged in his twenties, and a black Vauxhall Corsa.

The car was travelling along the road, towards Queenswood Drive and away from the Headingley area, when it was in collision with the man.

He was making his way over the road on a zebra crossing, at the time of the crash.

The pedestrian suffered extensive life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Police arrested the driver of the Corsa on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) have launched an appeal for information.

They would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the crash, saw how the vehicle was being driven in the run-up to the collision, or has video footage.

A full statement from West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road traffic collision in Leeds in which a pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries.

"The incident happened on Kirkstall Lane, close to Headingley cricket ground, at 10:55pm last night (17/2).

"A black Vauxhall Corsa was travelling along Kirkstall Lane, in the direction of Queenswood Drive and away from the Headingley area, when it was in collision with the male pedestrian who was crossing on a zebra crossing.

"The pedestrian, aged in his twenties, suffered extensive life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was taken to hospital.

"The driver of the Corsa has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving."
