A NUMBER of streets in Bradford city centre have been turned into war-torn Birmingham for the filming of a star-studded Netflix movie later this week.
Six Triple Eight, a drama set during the height of the Second World War, is set to be filmed in Bradford’s Little Germany on Thursday, February 16. The film follows the story of the Second World War’s only all-black, all-female unit.
Its cast is led by Kerry Washington - star of the TV drama Scandal - Susan Sarandon and talk show host and actor Oprah Winfrey.
Preparation work by the production company is taking shape on some streets in the area, with clues to what the scenes will feature.
Two red telephone boxes, each surrounded by tall piles of sandbags, have been constructed throughout the area for the filming.
A number of wartime army recruitment posters have been placed over windows on Little Germany, with slogans including ‘Register here – the Home Guard’, a poster from the Birmingham Air Raid Debris Clearance Scheme with the slogan ‘Men Wanted Now’, ‘Birmingham Needs You Now’.
An entrance to an air raid shelter for 110 people has been built on Cater Street, opposite Bradford Coroners' Court, which features a Union Jack flag on the entrance roof.
Piles of rubble can also be seen on a number of Little Germany streets, one featuring a chimney pot.
A window has been covered in a strip of corrugated metal with a painted message which reads ‘Building unsafe – do not enter’. More wartime recruitment posters can also be seen on walls of buildings on Peckover Street with the message ‘Help Britain finish the job’.
Items including wooden tables, chairs have also been stacked on one of the streets. Currer Street has also been covered in posters that read ‘National Service – It’s Up to You!’
A large banner with a crown and the message ‘Your courage, your cheerfulness, your resolution will bring us victory’ has been placed on one of the buildings. A bed and a child’s doll can also be seen as part of another large pile of rubble, at another site to be used for filming the movie.
Piles of sandbags, piles of bricks and painted curbstones can also be seen on Scoresby Street.
The streets in Little Germany affected by the filming work are: Scoresby Street, Burnett Street, Cater Street, Vicar Lane and Currer Street.
