A CANALSIDE area on the outskirts of the Saltaire World Heritage Site could be converted into a public car park if new plans are approved.

The vacant land off Ashley Lane in Shipley slopes down to the edge of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Now a planning application to use the land for an 18-space car park has been submitted to Bradford Council by Jamil Ashraf – the owner of the neighbouring warehouse.

The plans say that 10 spaces would be created at the canalside site, with a further eight created at the end of Ashley Lane.

The application says the current road is “not used effectively.”

It adds: “The development will also assist with regeneration and prevent neglected land from falling further into an eyesore.”

It says the neighbouring buildings are “very dilapidated and have been vandalised with graffittis.”

A decision on the application is expected next month.

In 2017 a retrospective planning application to store cars and vans on the site was refused by Bradford Council.

At that time planning officers said: “The use represents a blight of the land to the detriment of visual amenity being at odds with the character and vibrancy of the surrounding canal side area.”
