A BRADFORD company kickstarted its effort to tackle fly-tipping in Holme Wood.
BN Skips, based at The Iron Works in West Bowling, partnered with Incommunities Housing Association residents of Holme Wood to help them dispose of their waste.
The skip hire firm recently came up with the idea to place a skip in Holme Wood, allow residents to bring their waste to it and BN Skips would take away the waste for free.
The firm held its 'waste disposal day' for the community last week and worked closely with Bradford Council and Incommunities, which had staff on hand at a designated site.
Ben Kerwick, office manager for BN Skips, said: "We delivered a skip to the parade of shops on Holme Wood Road and in line with Bradford Council's database have managed to gather a list of tenants who would benefit the most from having the skip at their disposal.
"We were very happy to help and a lot of people turned out and we think it's had a benefit to the area straight away.
"This is our of giving back to the community and helping people to dispose of waste properly.
"We've followed through with our initial idea and we plan to keep doing it going forward.
"It's been an issue that's been really close to our boss' (Sean Nunney) heart because he grew up in the area."
Councillor Matt Edwards (Green, Tong) welcomed the gesture by BN Skips to tackle fly-tipping Holme Wood.
Cllr Edwards said: “It is great to see a local business giving back to their community," he said. "This was a big gesture from BN Skips and I along with many local people are incredibly grateful for their generosity with this skip and their time.
“Tong’s Green Party councillors will be working with Incommunities and Bradford Council to see if similar things could be done in the future to help tackle fly-tipping in Holme Wood.
“The majority of people living on Holme Wood want to see big improvements in the estate and councillors are working with them, Council staff and Incommunities to clean up the estate.
"This comes on the back of a very successful community clean up on Barthorpe Close organised between Bradford Council, Incommunities and the new Holme Wood Forward group.
“If we want to get to grips with the fly-tipping problem in Holme Wood we have to try something different and that is just what we are doing.
"Less than 50 per cent of people in Holme Wood have access to a car or a van so getting rid of large items or additional rubbish isn’t that easy. We need new ideas.”
