Some of Bradford’s best restaurants have been named as finalists in the inaugural Nation’s Curry Awards.
The awards will celebrate the top Asian curry professionals and businesses across all four corners of the UK.
The shortlisted nominees will gather for a sparkling, black-tie ceremony in Manchester later this month.
Just three restaurants in Bradford have been chosen out of the nation’s best chefs, restaurants, managers, takeaways, and curry schools.
Bradford's culinary talents have been named on two different categories - Best of Yorkshire and Vegetarian Restaurant of the Year.
A spokesperson for the award’s organiser, Oceanic Consulting, said the finalists have been chosen out of an industry filled with an "abundance of talent and fierce competition".
Let's dive into each of the 2023 finalists from Bradford.
Best of Yorkshire
Kun Indian Grill & Bistro, near Bradford city centre
Kun – an Indian halal bistro and grill found on Wilton Street, off Morley Street - opened its doors in June 2022.
Muhammad Shaqil, who worked as a chef for 34 years, and his wife, Vahida Iqbal, opened the restaurant after relocating to the city from Scotland.
Inspired by freshly cooked curries served by hotels in India, the menu features anything from the classic Karahi, Jalfrezi and Rogan Josh to grill-style meals.
Muhammad previously told the T&A that food is inspired by Indian grill and Asian fusion dishes, drawing from many Moroccan and middle eastern recipes.
Some of the restaurant’s latest reviews describe Kun as an “authentic new taste in Bradford” and a “hidden gem”.
It has proven to be so much of a success amongst this city of food lovers that Kun recently expanded with another floor.
Kebabeesh, Greengates
The Kebabeesh restaurant in Greengates has been serving traditional Indian cuisine since 1979.
The menu offers an extensive selection of dishes promising "the real taste of India and Pakistan".
Each dish has been prepared by classically trained chefs.
It isn't the first time that Kebabeesh, Greengates, has been named as a finalist or award-winner for its culinary creations.
Kebabeesh has won a number of awards since opening its doors.
Other finalists in this category include:
- Westbourne Spice, Otley
- Taas Restaurant, York
- The Royal Spice, Barnsley

Vegetarian Restaurant of the Year
Prashad, Drighlington
This hugely popular Indian restaurant first began life on Bradford’s Horton Grange Road and it's still earning awards and recognition 30 years later.
Run by husband-and-wife team Bobby and Minal Patel, Prashad's dishes tell the story of their family’s lives from India to West Yorkshire.
The menu features Gujarati recipes handed down through the family, made with top Yorkshire produce.
Prashad recently featured in the Hairy Bikers' new TV show, Go Local, on BBC Two.
In 2022's Michelin Guide, Prashad retained its Bib Gourmand rating.
The Bib Gourmand is handed to restaurants that fall just below earning a coveted Michelin Star for their food and dining experience.
Other finalists in this category include:
- Chai Paani, Leicester
- Sanskruti Restaurant, Manchester
- Lily’s Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, Ashton-under-Lyne

A spokesperson for Oceanic Consulting said: “The curry campaign has been hugely successful across the UK with Scottish, English and London editions to the awards. The Nation’s Curry Awards will be a brilliant night of fun, food and celebration.
“Despite the many challenges facing the curry industry, these awards prove how much talent there is fuelling the industry, satisfying all of our curry cravings. We have an abundance of talent and fierce competition this year and we wish best of luck to all finalists.”
