BRADFORD figures have said their thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the devastating earthquake in the Middle East.

MPs gave their condolences after the horror in Turkey and Syria claimed thousands of lives – with the death toll still expected to increase.

It has been reported that at least 5,000 people are dead and more than 24,000 are injured.

Buildings shook in nearby Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Greece, amongst other places, while tremors from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake were detected as far away as Denmark and Greenland.

Shocking footage showed buildings in southern Turkey collapsing, as people were forced to dig through rubble with their hands to search for lost relatives.

“The news is beyond horrific,” said Imran Hussain, Labour MP for Bradford East.

“My thoughts are with all those caught up in this disaster.

“Our government and others must act with the urgency this awful tragedy needs over the coming hours, days and weeks.”

Naz Shah, Labour MP for Bradford West, added: “I am praying for those that have lost their lives and I send condolences to their families at this difficult time.”

Wakefield-based charity Penny Appeal – which has many volunteers from Bradford – is working on the ground to support the victims.

It is also appealing for donations.

"The victims desperately need our help," said Ridwana Wallace-Laher, Senior Director of Growth at the charity.

"With the public's support, we can provide essential aid to those affected and help them through this difficult time.

"Every donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference."

Penny Appeal’s Ahmad Boston also told the Telegraph & Argus: “It’s truly heart-breaking.

“We’ve heard reports from our teams that children are being pulled out of the rubble.

“But we have been inspired by the amazing response here in the UK. Despite the cost of living crisis, people have donated hugely to support those who are suffering.”

Bradford City of Sanctuary also told the T&A: "We are devastated - Our solidarity goes to everyone affected and those working to save lives.

"Bradford is home to many people from this region - our thoughts are with those who have family and friends affected by this tragedy."

Bradford community figure Dr Javed Bashir added:"I offer my sympathy and condolences to all those affected."

“Bradford stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria, and will do whatever we can to support those in need."
