HUGE beams have been craned into position as part of a new bridge as part of a major road improvement in one part of Calderdale.

Eight beams, 48 metres long, three metres wide and weighing over 250 tonnes in total, were guided into position using the two cranes.

They form part of a new bridge and link road at Salterhebble near Halifax, with the new link bridge spanning the Calder and Hebble canal due to open to traffic this summer.

The beams had to be delivered to the construction site under a police escort, and required parts of the M62 and A629 to be closed for a period overnight four separate dates in January.

The bridge scheme is part of the £28 million phase 1b of the A629 improvement programme, which is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The project aims to improve road safety and journey times between Huddersfield and Halifax.

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and strategy, Councillor Jane Scullion, said this marked a “major milestone” in the project.

“An engineering project of this scale requires an incredible amount of planning, not only to lift the extremely large and heavy beams, but also to manage the logistics of transporting them to the site.”
