POLICE are investigating after a Bradford community centre which acts as a lifeline to many was broken in the early hours of Monday morning (January 30).

Alison Wilson runs the community café and foodbank at New Hope Christian Fellowship on Halifax Road.

She said that damage was done to the building and a number of things were stolen in the break-in, while there has been a police presence outside the centre all day.

She said food – intended to be handed out to vulnerable people in need – was among the things taken.

“I think the fact that they’ve stolen food makes it a lot worse,” said Alison.

“That food is helping people, it could be helping the neighbours of those who broke in, or even their relatives.

“Our community café is ‘pay what you feel’. It offers people a warm space, and anybody is welcome. That also makes this even harder to take.”

Alison added that the other items stolen included a TV, computers, a panini maker and a milkshake maker.

“What else makes this a real setback is the fact that the money we make only pays for the food next week – it won’t pay for new equipment,” she said.

“A TV was ripped off the wall, causing significant damage, and they’ve smashed one of the internal doors.

“We use computers to help people who might be struggling to pay their bills or claim benefits, so it’s also a huge shame that they’ve gone.

“Whoever took the stuff might be trying to sell it – so we want people in the area to be aware of this.”

Despite her frustrations, Alison was quick to remind people of the strong community spirit which exists in the area.

“It’s disappointing but, on the other hand, there are so many people in the area who we have a great relationship with – and that makes us determined to keep going,” she said.

“We are hoping that the community rallies around us and helps us – some people have already done that, they’ve helped to clear up some of the mess, which is lovely.

“We really appreciate their support.”

The Telegraph & Argus approached West Yorkshire Police for comment, and a spokesperson said: “We are investigating a burglary at New Hope Christian Fellowship overnight.

“Enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference number 132300056160.”
