A Bradford trucker is sharing what life on the road is really like with more than 500,000 followers on social media.
Adam Mctasney turned his fortunes around after applying for an international truck driving job in Galway on a whim.
After four years working in his 40-tonne truck, Adam has been to every country in Western and Eastern Europe, swam with dolphins, and experienced Norway’s midnight sun and Northern lights.
From free food vouchers to life without paying bills, Adam’s daily updates on his journeys have captured the attention of truckers and curious fans alike.
Now he hopes to inspire more people to take a leap into the unknown by sharing his story.
When Adam earnt his licence in the Royal Logistics Corps in 2004, he never realised it would take him around the world.
Adam, who grew up on the Buttershaw estate, said: “Growing up in Bradford I’ve always had quite a narrow mindset. I didn’t know what was going on other than what was going on in the estate. It was about spending money and going out with friends.
“Now it’s about visiting landmarks and attractions and meeting new people, the cultures, the food, travelling, all the different food you experience and the way people cook things.
“I can live in the truck and save a lot of money. It’s not the easiest job but it works for me. When I was living in Bradford I was living hand to mouth, never had any savings, never could afford holidays.
“You can save up all your money and buy a house in four years on the road.
“There’s a lot of perks with trucking. It’s more of a lifestyle than a job.
He added: “I remember my first trip out in Europe. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done to go on the opposite side of the road. It was nerve-wracking the first few months but you get used to it.
“I want to influence good things and show young people it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get a good education. I got no GCSEs and now I’m travelling the world, living the dream.
“You can get out of debt, you can change your life. Go out and find the opportunities, that’s what I did.
“There’s a lot of Government schemes now to get licences.
“I’ve changed my life.”
The former Buttershaw Upper School pupil is sharing the same message with his 16-year-old son, who has just started college.
Adam said: “You can do it at any age.
“You need to start a goal, an achievable goal, and focus on that.
“Invest in yourself. Everyone spends £100 on a pair of trainers but nobody spends money to better themselves.”
