THE postcode lottery across the district when it comes to getting a face-to-face appointments at GP surgeries has been laid bare.

NHS figures on the type of appointments made at each local doctor’s surgery reveal that at some practices the proportion of in-person appointments is as low as 36 per cent.

The NHS Digital data for October 2022 indicates that there are four surgeries or groups where face-to-face appointments account for less than half of all appointments.

In contrast, 14 GP practices saw patients in person more than 90 per cent of the time.

The best performing was Baildon Medical Practice, which saw its face-to-face appointments reach 98 per cent in October.

Across the district, the average proportion of in-person appointments was 69.7 per cent.

Our searchable table shows all the GP surgeries and groups across the Bradford District and Craven Health & Care Partnership area, and how they fare when it comes to the proportion of face-to-face appointments.

The data, which now contains details on the mode of appointment at practice level, is described as experimental, meaning it may not capture the full picture.

The Telegraph & Argus contacted both the highest and lowest-scoring GP practices, with Baildon Medical Practice declining to comment.

A spokesman for Dyneley House Surgery in Skipton said they were proud to offer the highest standards of care to their patients, which was reflected in a large number of new patients registering in the last year.

“The recently published data shows the total number of appointments provided per 1,000 patients. Dyneley House Surgery is ranked in the top 10 per cent of practices nationally against this measure and in the top 25 per cent of practices in Bradford and Craven.

“In addition to face-to-face appointments, we have a large number of valuable contacts every day with our patients by phone, text messages and email. These are carried out by our doctors, nurses, pharmacists, health care assistants and other professionals.”

They added that there were limitations to the data as practices manage their appointment books in different ways.

Nancy O’Neill, chief operating officer at Bradford District & Craven Health & Care Partnership, reiterated that the figures only measure data about appointments and therefore is not an indication of practice quality or patient care – and it does not capture all appointment data or clinical activity.

“We are working locally with our GP practices to ensure every appointment is accurately captured on their systems so that over the coming months the national data provides a true representation of the number of appointments, including face-to-face, delivered by our GP practices.

“In October 2022, 415,985 appointments were delivered across Bradford District and Craven, which is an increase of 25,991 during the same time last year and an increase of over 25,466 appointments in comparison to pre-pandemic levels. Our local figures also show that our GP practices are now offering between 65 and 70 per cent of all appointments face-to-face.”

“We understand that people with a worry or concern want to receive care and support as quickly as possible. Our GP practices continue to work exceptionally hard to provide more appointments, as well as a greater variety of appointments.”

Face-to-face appointments dropped massively during the Covid-19 pandemic as restrictions were imposed and people were urged to stay at home.
