BRADFORD students have called for a rent reduction amid ongoing problems in part of an award-winning student village.

The issues have left students in one block without hot water, while there was also no heating for a period of time.

Two students from the University of Bradford, who both live on The Green – on-campus accommodation recommended by the University – have said the problems started three weeks ago, and also hit out at a perceived lack of communication.

The University said it is aware of the problem, and although is does not own or operate any student accommodation, it is working to find a solution.

Homes for Students, accomodation provider for The Green, said a mechanical fault is to blame.

It added that, although hot water is still not available, the heating issue was fixed quickly and staff have been in regular communication with affected students.

One student, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I pay £98 a week for appalling conditions.

“The four of us were provided with a key for another building, a couple of minutes’ walk away, so we could shower there – but that’s not ideal.

“They’re expecting us to walk out in temperatures reaching minus, and then walk back to our rooms which don’t have heating – it’s a joke.

“We’ve sent so many emails asking for reduced rent – but they’re not responding and are pushing it to the side.

“The only responses we have received are apologetic emails. I just don’t think it’s fair.

“If issues like this happen, they should be fixed within 24 to 48 hours.

“They said they have had several engineers out to look at it."

Another anonymous student living on The Green added: “We’ve had no heating, but are still expected to pay rent.

“We’re not getting what we pay for.

“We’re praying for help. It’s been very cold and we’re all getting desperate now.”

A University of Bradford spokesperson said: “The University is aware that some students have been left without hot water.

“While we do not own or operate any student accommodation, student wellbeing remains one of our key priorities.

"We have offered to make hot shower facilities in our Unique Sports Centre available to all those affected.”

A spokesperson for The Green added: “A mechanical fault to the boiler has resulted in a number of students in one block being unable to receive hot water and heating.

"We were able to restore heating to all bedrooms quickly, however specialist equipment is required to fix the hot water.

"This has been ordered and we expect it to be delivered in the coming days.

"We have taken appropriate steps to manage the situation while this is resolved, including providing temporary showering facilities on site.

“We are working to fix this as soon as possible and are in close communication with students affected, keeping them updated on our progress.”
