A NEW Bradford gym is offering a unique programme, created by an Olympic medalist.

BirdBoxx, which is based in Queensbury's Black Dyke Mills, has become one of the first in the UK to adopt Tony Jeffries' Box n Burn.

The programme combines the principles of professional boxing training and functional fitness training.

Jeffries, an Olympic bronze medalist in Beijing 2008 who runs Boxing Fitness Connect, visited the gym on Thursday as he tours the world to build his brand.

Owner Matt Bird was blown away when the former pro boxer, who makes a living out in California, said he would come down to run the first session.

"It was a great experience to learn from him," he said.

"Tony is touring the world with his family so it coincided with his trip to the UK.

"But I did not expect him to spend all day at the gym and take photos with members and run the class himself."

Personal trainer Matt first came across Tony and his work during the first lockdown back in 2020.

Once gyms were back open, the 42-year-old decided to grab the bull by the horns and go solo.

He said: "I started learning boxing through Tony Jeffries' YouTube channel.

"When the gyms reopened again, a friend of mine owned Platinum Boxing and he had some space, so he said if I wanted to start a large group training class in there, I could.

"I implemented my knowledge of CrossFit with boxing. It is something different.

"I approached Tony and his gym Box n Burn in California.

"I knew they licensed the programme to the gyms in America and wondered if they would do it in the UK.

"I had an interview with them and they agreed to it."

BirdBoxx is largely made up of female members with the gym, not just offering boxing but general fitness classes.

"It is boxing for fitness, not boxing for fighting which is different," Matt added.

"It is more inclusive for everyone and not as intimidating. It is probably 70 per cent female.

"There is nowhere else that offers what we do. The classes are always different, it is not just boxing."

As for the future, Matt added: "There is a really good atmosphere so I am happy with how it is going. We have a close-knit community.

"It is a large space so we are looking to do other things throughout the day there too."
