A SHIPLEY man has appeared in court for racially aggravated behaviour towards a police officer at a railway station.

Matthew Porter, 37, of Saltaire Road, faced a charge of racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress – words/writing.

Court documents state that Porter intended to cause a police officer "harassment, alarm or distress used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour thereby causing that or another person harassment, alarm or distress and the offence was racially aggravated".

The offence took place at Leeds Railway Station, New Station Street, Leeds, on June 25, 2022.

Porter was handed a community order including an alcohol treatment requirement for six months. He was also ordered to pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 costs for the charge. An application was made to make a deduction from Porter’s benefits.

There was no separate penalty for a second charge of using threatening/abusive words/behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, which took place at the same location and same date as the first offence.

Porter pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on January 9.
