A DOCUMENTARY on Bradford’s Nigerian community will be screened at a sold-out event in the city next week.

Nigerian Voices – a collection of interviews with elders from the Nigerian Community Association of Bradford – will be shown at the African Caribbean Achievement Project (ACAP) headquarters on Claremont on Saturday, January 21.

The interviews have been carried out by younger members of the community, who have sought to find out more about how their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties left Nigeria to begin a new life in Bradford.

“We think history forms an important part of how people view themselves and the world around them,” the organiser of the event said.

“Sharing history is a great way to help us understand and appreciate each other.

“African history in particular is poorly understood and is normally just presented through the lens of charity and poverty – this can lead to misunderstandings.

“We’re hoping events like this, where people get to hear some real stories, will help to smooth out those cultural clashes.”

The event will run from 6pm to 8pm and will be followed by a Q&A session and food.
