A WRITING charity based in the North of England is coming to Bradford to help budding writers access the industry and gain insight.

New Writing North, an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation which identifies talent is bringing a Roadshow event to Bradford’s Kala Sangam, on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

The event focuses on bringing together creatives from across Bradford and providing them with the opportunity to network and develop their writing.

The event is held with Northern Writers’ Award which offers prizes to writers and offers them the chance to have their work published.

Will Mackie, who runs the awards programme, said: “If you’re entirely new to TV screenwriting, poetry or fiction or have written and published before, we’d love to see you at our Bradford Roadshow.

“We’re really looking forward to coming to Bradford along with our inspirational guest speakers and know what a hub of talent the city is.

“Our programmes have a track record of identifying, supporting and nurturing writers based in the North of England and it’s a real joy to have a chance to talk about this work and meet Bradford-based writers.”

The Bradford Roadshow has been produced by New Writing North’s Talent Development team working alongside Creative Associate, Tammie Ash.

Confirmed speakers include the screenwriter Taiba Ahmad, novelist Karen Powell, author of the acclaimed The River Within, Hannah Durkan, author of Zeina Starborn and the Sky Whale, Habiba Desai and Sara Razzaq from Fox and Windmill Books, and the novelist Sairish Hussain, one of the 2023 Northern Writers’ Awards judges.

Habiba Desai, from publishing company Fox and Windmill said: “We’re really excited to be at this event and to speak with new writers.

“We’re always looking for new talent and it’s so good that the Roadshow is coming to Bradford, so we can see the talent we have here in Bradford.

“The main aim of this is to make the publishing industry more accessible and get more northern voices out there.

“It’s an exciting chance for local people to get involved and to see how the industry works and meet likeminded people, that’s why we want to be part of this initiative.”

Tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite.
