BRADFORD Council has revealed an unusual new way to stop people from littering – offering cash prizes for taking photos of yourself using a bin.
The Council has announced that it is working with the free App ‘litterlotto’ which rewards people who are disposing of litter properly and putting it in the bin.
Each time a person puts an item of litter into a bin, they are encouraged to record the waste deposit and upload the image onto the app.
This will provides opportunities to win spot prizes and entry into a monthly jackpot draw.
The authority says prizes range from £5 to £10,000 and from Monday entries from the Bradford District will receive a double entry to the UK £1,000 weekly jackpot.
The campaign has been dubbed ‘bin it to win it’.
It will launch on Monday and more information can be found at https://www.litterlotto.com/ including how to download the App.
The campaign has been rolled out across the globe, and organisations such as McDonalds has also partnered with the international scheme.
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “We are hoping that by introducing this App it will encourage more people to make sure that they throw their litter away properly and responsibly and reward those that already do this.”
It is not the first time Bradford has adopted an unusual campaign to cut down on litter.
In 2017 the Council teamed up with the Chewing Gum Action Group to launch its “Bin It Your Way” campaign – which used posters of people dropping their gum in bins in different, elaborate ways.
And in 2019 a campaign aimed at stopping litter from being thrown from cars began.
It involved roadside posters warning people “Don’t be a tosser.”
