AN historic Bradford city centre pub is on the market just months after it was sold.

The Boy and Barrel, on Westgate, can be traced back to the 17th century and was initially sold in summer 2022 but never re-opened. It was sold again late last year and now a new buyer is sought.

Large black signs are on display on the front and side of the boarded up pub, each with a message that advertises the sale, reading: “Commercial building for sale (BMV – below market value). Contact: 07824 449 686.”

It is on the market with a guide price of £210,000, which the owners say is negotiable.

Owais Khan, a Pudsey-based property developer who currently owns the pub, says he hopes the site is bought by someone who wishes to re-open it as a pub to keep the city’s tradition alive.

Mr Khan said: “We would appreciate it if it re-opened as a pub.

“We are open to offers. It has got a two-bedroom flat above the pub with separate kitchen and bathroom, which could make £550 per month rental. Downstairs is a commercial building.

“The pub has a history to it. It would be great if someone wants to buy it and open it back up as a pub.

“It’s the best part of the town for a pub.”

The pub was previously sold in July last year and the new owners were set to refurbish it and re-open it at a later date. However this failed to materialise and the site remained closed and was then bought by Mr Khan late last year.

The pub was sold for £160,000 last summer after being on the market for an initial £175,000 asking price.

It ceased trading after it was refurbished by a previous owner in 2020. Audrey Coyne, a previous landlady of the pub, said in 2011 that she had traced the pub back to the 1800s and had seen evidence to suggest it had been in existence as early as 1640.

The Boy and Barrel was converted into a gin-palace style pub in the second half of the 19th century, with large external window and lavish interior fittings.

Back in 1959, it featured in the iconic film Room at the Top, which was nominated for six Oscar awards and picked up two for Best Actress and Best Screenplay.

In 2012 the pub also featured in the controversial Channel 4 documentary Make Bradford British.
