EXPECT to see beetroot, mushrooms and rhubarb on the menu at popular restaurant Prashad after it took part in the Hairy Bikers' new TV show.

TV chefs Si King and Dave Myers visited the Drighlington vegetarian Indian restaurant in the hope that they could play matchmaker and introduce them to three innovative local suppliers.

Their challenge was to “find three new local suppliers who have yet to appear on Bobby and Minal’s radar – with quality produce that might help take Prashad to the next level”.

Husband-and-wife team Bobby and Minal Patel started by introducing the duo to Prashad’s cuisine, then the Bikers set off on their mission.

The restaurant began in Bradford 30 years ago, set up by Bobby’s parents before being handed down.

Having won a number of awards, including a Michelin Bib Gourmand, they are now looking to take things to next level, aiming for a coveted Michelin Star.

Describing Prashad as blending Gujarati cuisine with fine dining, Bobby added: “It’s really important that the menu evolves - it keeps us innovative, it keeps us fresh.

“I’m really hoping that the Bikers are able to find us some new suppliers with some new produce that challenges Minal and enables us to incorporate some new dishes.”

After first sampling two of Minal’s dishes in the Prashad kitchen – open samosas and masala dosa – the Bikers visit the Yorkshire Mushroom Emporium in Ilkley, set up by five schoolfriends.

They also visit a rhubarb grower in Rothwell and a beetroot producer near Doncaster, cooking up three different Prashad-inspired dishes in their own kitchen in an effort to entice the Patel’s palates.

With the mushrooms, rhubarb and beetroot sourced, the pair created garlic mushroom pakoras, beetroot-stuffed paratha and rhubarb, rose and cardamom kulfi.

Si said: “I think we got Minal and Bobby’s brief pretty spot on in the sense that – the quality of the ingredients that we brought to their table and their palettes this evening was of an incredibly high standard because the people that are producing them care as much as they do.”

Dave added: “They want a Michelin Star and I think the suppliers we’ve found may be able to help them on that journey.”

Of the new suppliers, Bobby said: “The bikers have come in, they’ve identified some phenomenal suppliers for us. We’ll be following up every single one of those and we’ll hopefully be able to get this into the menus extremely quickly.”

The Prashad episode of Hairy Bikers Go Local is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
