“IT’S A down pipe you want - I’ll show you.”

“An incinerator bin? Yes, just down there.”

Muhammad Yameen could not be more helpful, as customers approach him with a string of questions.

As co-owner with brother Naeem, of Your Local DIY shop in Yeadon, he is passionate about his product and loves to be able to help if anyone needs guidance on household tasks.

“We both love DIY. We are very experienced handymen and very good at it,” he says. “We enjoy explaining things to people, advising on what they should use. We like it when they come back and say: ‘I have done the job and ‘it looks really nice.’” It is very satisfying.”

The brothers opened a DIY shop in Thornton village, called Thornton DIY, in 2011.

Five years ago they sold the shop to a friend and took on the Yeadon business. “It’s a busy shop in a good location on Kirk Lane. It has a really nice atmosphere,” says Muhammad.

The welcoming shop is a cornucopia of all things DIY. Outside sit wheelbarrows, sweeping brushes, stepladders, fishing nets, watering cans, buckets and shovels. Coal, logs and kindling are on sale to ensure customers keep their winter supplies topped up.

Inside, floor to ceiling shelves are stocked with tools, locks, brassware, screws, adhesives, sealants, paint - anything and everything DIY.

“We sell wood, plumbing supplies, and car number plates as well. And we cut keys, all sorts of keys,” says Naeem.

Many of their customers have been coming to the shop - which is open seven days a week - for many years.

Emma, shopping on the day of this interview, says: “The shop has everything we need. Muhammad and Naeem are so friendly and helpful. When I come and give them my usual random explanation for what needs doing in my home they always knows exactly what I mean.”

Says Muhammad: “We know all our regular customers really well and like meeting new ones too.”

Most of the questions they get asked are plumbing related, but it could be an issue with guttering, flooring or “anything really.”

Adds Naeem: “We are well-known locally - in DIY you name it and we will most likely have it in the shop.”
